Skydive Taupo! |
So we left off leaving Christchurch on Thursday night after Nitro Circus, we made it about an hour and half out of the city before we got tired and crashed (aka slept, don't want the 'rents to thing we got in an accident or anything, cause we didn't) on the side of the road for the night. We rattled our dags early Friday morn so that we could make miles and be in Picton for the 2pm ferry. This actually felt like a road-trip, more than 4 hours in the van with a destination in mind by a certain time, what we can consider a road-trip in Canada. Made the ferry with time to spare and Chris under the bed, may or may not have had to sneak him on.
We made major plans to be in Wellington on Thursday, not Thursday the 17th, just a Thursday. Our previous time in Wellington told us that if we were in town on a Thursday we could get 2 for 1 gourmet burgers at a place called "The Craftsman." And 2 for 1 burgers the size of both your hands combined is a pretty sweet deal, especially for cheap travellers. After we marved down the remainder of our burgers we headed out on the street to meet up with Meg, a friend that Chris met in Mt. Maunganui. Eventually we met up and headed back to her flat downtown, spent the night talking and catching up before I fell asleep in the van on the side of the busy downtown corridor.
The following morning I was the only one up because apparently everyone else stayed up till 530 in the apartment, so that meant I had some free time. I figured it was time we had a well cooked meal so I made a brief shopping detour to the New World and picked up breakfast. After a pretty tasty meal of french toast we were off to the 'beach in Wellington' they don't have much of a beach compared to the rest of NZ, but compared to Canada it's heaven! We spent the afternoon there with Meg and her flatmate before heading back downtown to meet up with our kiwi/canadian friend Jess Young. After we found each other we headed over toward the stadium downtown to watch our first live professional rugby game. We enjoyed one of the first matches of the season between the Hurricanes and Highlanders, with the Highlanders defeating the hometown Hurricanes. A pretty genuine Kiwi experience all in all.
Who doesn't love climbing trees? |
Saturday was spent saying bye to Meg and her flatmates while hanging out with Jess again briefly before heading up north to Taupo. Went for a big walk off of the city and up the tram to the botanic gardens, yea, we are classy like that! But it wasn't for long and we had to say goodbye to Jess and hit the road. We made it to Taupo late Saturday night and had a quick Subway diner before going for a brief walk only to bump in to my friend Katie from Smithers. Well it wasn't so much as a "bump into" more rather a "run a scream into." So the 4 of us hung out for the night downtown.
The road outside of Taupo goes threw a military training zone in the desert, it was an awesome drive! |
Sunday was a nice clear day in Taupo so Chris and I figured to go for our second skydive of the trip, and our lives. We did another 12,000 ft jump from Taupo, the same as the first jump we did. The experience was similar, more excitment then nerves but I have to say that my first jump was better. But this time we did get photos to prove we did jump!
There, photo evidence we wen't skydiving. |
Only Chris and I jumped this time because Trev plans on going when his dad comes to visit him in March. |
Then we headed north again from Taupo after the jump up to Cambridge where we were fortunate enough to stay with Jess' flatmates and crash on the floor. Gotta love the connections!
So that is the first part of my final week, plans for the remaining few days you may ask? Beaches! Thanks for reading guys.
Lates, N8
