After Cambridge, we hit the road south to Rotorua, or RotoVEGAS as Jess calls it. The place is the epitome of a tourist trap, you could spend multiple days and hundreds, thousands of dollars here. Its got everything your little touristy heart could desire. We had a few ideas of what we wanted to conquer in town and we were able to do it all within 2 days.
Just before we rolled into Rotorua, we saw the sign for Zorb, which was the first thing on our list. Ive been stoked to go Zorbing since me and my brother in law saw it on the tele back in the day. So I Zorbed extra hard for the j-bobber back home! It was surprisingly more awesome than it looks, the hill is a bit shorter than I'd like, but in the end its a mean time. Something that we should have in Canada for sure!
Made it into Rotorua later, stumbled across Planet Backpackers which is a hostel/information/booking agency. They guy there was super sweet and told us of a few things to do, we booked white-water rafting for the day after and headed down the road for a campsite. We managed to park not far from a Rodeo just outside of town, spent the night there and hit up the rodeo scene the next day. It wasn't anything special, something comparable to the Kispiox rodeo back home, but a good taste of the cowboy scene for us boys. After the rodeo we headed back to town, found some stock car races going on. We chilled there and listened to the rumble for the night, something new to me.
Then Sunday morning came about, we were worried we had yet another flat battery and possibly worse a toasted alternator, but thankfully it was just a matter of a poor connection. We were stoked to say the least. At lunch we jumped in a bus and headed out to the Wairoa river, a 45 mins drive from Rotorua. There we got the white water rafting experience we were looking for, also something new to me, not to the other two guys. Although they said the one here was way more intense.
So yea, we spent another night in Rotorua, basically on the side of the highway, yet again. In the morning, we went to the library, bummed some wifi, and I made a call home to my sister and brother in law to find out that they're expecting in July and I'm going to be an Uncle. Pretty exciting start to the day, and once again, we were on the road, heading south to Taupo.
